Behind the Flame: Jack Broughton

Welcome to Behind the Flame, a series created to showcase our incidentios.

Meet Jack Broughton, Business Development Representative here at incident.io.

Q: What is it like being a BDR at incident.io?

I don't come from a traditional BDR background, I came from recruitment, which really helped me get to grips with how things need to be done here. But it's also very different in the sense that I've gone from speaking to candidates for a long period of time to having maybe 30 seconds on the phone with someone before they are hanging up the phone and that's been a big transition.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you?

One of the things I really love about the work here is that we're very much trusted to structure our day in the way we see fit. Every day is always focused around outbound, but it's mixing that up between LinkedIn, the phone, email, or working more specifically on campaigns. There are a lot of different things we can do to make each day exciting.

Q: What are you most looking forward to with incident.io this year and beyond?

Just super excited with the direction the company's heading. One of the amazing things about our weekly all-hands is that we get really good insight into the plans and what's coming up next. You can just feel the energy and excitement, and it always makes me feel positive about what's ahead.

Q: What does collaboration look like on the BDR team?

In the BDR team specifically, we're all really close. If someone's having success with something, they'll shout across their desks, or drop something in Slack if we're all working from home that day. Everyone is very quick to share what's working, or ask a question if they're struggling, the team is super supportive.

Q: What was something that surprised you when you joined?

I knew how talented everyone was going to be here. I knew it had a seriously high bar across the whole organisation. What really stood out to me was just how humble everyone is, and how there are no egos. I've heard so many people say the same thing, that they've been amazed at how genuinely great humans everyone here. It's something I'm really proud to be a part of.

Q: What does incident.io do differently from anywhere else you've worked?

In my previous roles you very quickly realise that most companies talk about their values and culture, but those tend to be empty words or statements. At incident.io I think it's very fair to say that we literally see our values in the flesh, day in and day out.

Q: What is the value that most resonates with you?

Find a Way is the one that resonates with me most personally. Especially in what we do as BDRs, when you can really feel up against it sometimes. That statement alone has always rung true to me.

Q: What does FFOTM mean to you?

I have two kids, so me and my wife very rarely get to spend time together without them. When they're both in school on a Friday, it's really nice to actually have that time where we can properly catch up, it means a lot.

Q: What's something you've changed your mind about since joining?

There's no culture here of pushing one way of working. We really embrace people adopting their own personality, being themselves, and leaning into that. A lot of the individual success we experience here comes from that ability to work in the way that suits your own style.

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give yourself on your first day?

Don't rush. Especially during onboarding: everyone comes in wanting to prove themselves and tends to rush through that process. But there's so much value in slowing down. There's so much great information and support there to help you, and if I had my time again, I would have spent more of it enjoying that period.

Q: Why shouldn't you work at incident.io?

There's such a drive for continually improving here. It's not the place to come and stand still. Whilst we have an amazing culture, it's definitely the highest-performing environment I've been part of. If you feel like you've already arrived and don't need to push yourself any further, it might not be the best place. But if you have the mindset that you want to keep growing, it's a great environment to be part of.

Q: What made you say yes to incident.io?

I'd been following incident.io from the very start. As a recruiter, it was always a company I was keen to work with. I already had such positive feelings towards it, so I knew pretty much from the start that I wanted to work here.

Q: What advice would you give to candidates interviewing with us?

Prepare, and think about having as many questions as you can that are going to help you make the best decision for yourself. Use the process to figure out if this is the right fit for you, not just to impress us.
